We have chosen the Berkshire pig. Their meat is what they call " the other red meat". When I was a child in Germany, pork was red and not pale pink.
It was flavorful and tender. We have stumbled across the Berkshire while researching different breeds and once you try it there is no turning back.
Berkshire pork is a premium meat. They are a Heritage breed. They have been featured in Chefs Magazine for their high quality meat and flavor.
These pictures below show how a good example of humane pig farming. We have found this local breeder and have bought 5 feeder pigs from him.
Here the little piglets nurse with their mom and play in the fields. After 6 weeks they are weaned and than raised to gain weight for the market.
Some get sold as roasting or feeder pigs.
The next day, here they are checking out their new home.
Already rooting
Dinner time
A trip around the new hutch
There is a whole lot more rooting to do
They are enjoying the afternoon sun.
The pigs are fed a natural mix without hormones and medications. Their feed has vitamins, minerals and we add some fresh raw goats milk and whey.
We also add Kelp and fresh eggs to their diet. We worm naturally with Diatomaceous Earth and reach seldom for harsher methods.
They get fresh clean water several times during the day. Due to the fact that we have so many predators they will be in a smaller pen near the house. After
they are big enough they will be moved to a half acre fenced in section. There are some shade trees, a large feeder and plenty of room to run and play.
Sorry, we are sold out of USDA inspected pork meat at this time.
Thank You.
